I graduated as a teacher and later as a student of Fine Art, majoring in fibre and ceramics at Preston Institute of Technology. Born in Melbourne, I taught primary students in Melbourne, Toronto, then at Eltham College until my retirement. Since then I have been teaching English to Chinese High School Students and also to the staff of several Chinese hospitals. I met Jenny Phillips during a Student-in-Residence programme at Eltham College and subsequently enrolled in her “Botanical Art School of Melbourne” where I continue to study. I have participated in group exhibitions at Villa Mulberry, the Botanical Art School of Melbourne, the Wiregrass Gallery Eltham, “The Art of Botanical Illustration” at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Bendigo Art Gallery, the “X1X International Botanical Congress Shenzhen, China, the international “ Margaret Flockton Award” and “Botanica” at the Sydney Botanical Gardens, Bendigo Art Gallery. My work is represented in several private and public collections including the Nillumbik Art Collection and the Victorian State Botanical Collection at the National Herbarium.
With the guidance of Fiona McKinnon, the web, a good library at the Botanical Art School of Melbourne, and assistance from the National Herbarium, I enjoy satisfying my curiosity, widening my knowledge and trying to transform plants into an attractive and engaging visual representation. Each painting is a new challenge to create an elegant but accurate picture, to do justice to the beauty of the plant and to portray the specific details of the particular plant. And each time I finish one painting, I think…. Well … What can I paint next?
